Bedi Hanuman Temple Puri – well known as Daria Mahavir Temple. This temple is located at Penthakata Puri, left side of the Chakratirtha road. About The Temple

Story Behind The Temple

Another local name of this temple is Bedi Hanuman. As name suggest there is a interesting story behind the temple. It is believed that Srikhetra is protected by Daria Mahavir from the fury of the sea. Due to Daria Mahavir, sea does not cross its limits and not entering in to the boundaries of Puri. During the age of built of Jagannath temple, Baruna (God of Sea) was able to came to Jagannath Temple. Once sea water entered to Puri and made damage to the temple.

Lord Jagannath asked Hanuman to explain how the sea entered the city in his presence. Lord Hanuman told that he was left for Ayodhya and not present at that time. He bunk his duties for laddus of Ayodhya. Then Lord Jagannath tied Hanumans hands and feet with rope (bedi) and asked him to be keep a tight watch on the sea shore day and night. Since then hands and feet of Lord Hanuman are tied with rope (bedi) and he known as ‘Bedi Hanuman’.
