According to mythology, once when Goddess Lakshmi Devi left Shri Mandira, Jagannath and Balabhadra become poor and had to go out for begging. When Jagannath and Balabhadra were out during that time, Subhadra Devi was staying with Mausi Maa.

According to a local tale Mausi maa got the name Ardhasini as she drank half of the seawater to save Puri from drowning in floods. Also another belief says, Ardhasini along with Kapalmochna Shiva are the day and night guardians of Shree Temple and Puri Town.
